Three schools win grand prizes for “Talkin’ Trash”
Three Horry County schools have been named grand prize winners of the 2011-2012 "Talkin' Trash" contest sponsored by the Horry County Solid Waste Authority. The contest, now in its eleventh year, involves fourth graders in recycling projects in their schools and communities.
Schools compete in three categories based on student enrollment. Each school is judged based on the number of pounds collected per fourth grade student per month. Grand prize winners collecting the most recyclables for this school year are: South Conway Elementary School, 20,700 pounds; Green Sea Floyds Elementary School, 33,550 pounds; and Lakewood Elementary School, 28,818 pounds. As a reward, fourth graders from these schools will go on a fun-filled educational study trip to Ripley's Aquarium, with lunch and transportation provided by the Horry County Solid Waste Authority.
Each month a different recyclable is collected by students at participating schools. The school that recycles the most items each month wins a plaque, a computer for their school, and a visit from the Talkin' Trash crew.
